Background
As part of the efforts to speak with One Voice within context of the UN Development Assistance Plan II, the Resident Coordinator’s Office in Tanzania is the main link between the UN and the Government and Co-chairs the Joint Government – UN Steering Committee. Enhanced communication between the UN and key stakeholders is a function performed by the office and it is in this respect that the Resident Coordinator’s Office is seeking a graphic design intern who will produce creative visual content which will be used in all methods of the RCO’s communication, both internally and externally, and support other communication functions of the office.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the UNRCO Communication Analyst the intern will be responsible for the following.


Layout and design of information and communication materials (i.e. banners, posters, booklets, newsletters, presentations, leaflets, books, reports, calendars, bulletins, flyers, cards, e-journals, infographics, factsheets, etc.) that are produced by the UNRCO and UN Communication Group (UNCG);


Produce creative and innovative visual content to be used in communication of and advocacy for the SDGs (mainly to youth), UN Tanzania social media accounts, website, events, as well as other internal and external communication materials. This includes supporting with innovative ideas for the dissemination of the SDGs and the UN Business Plan within the UN Tanzania Compound;


Support the dissemination of content on UN Tanzania social media accounts.


Support documentation of field visits of various events through photography and videography.


Improve and edit artwork, photos, charts and other graphic elements that are used by the UN;


Contribute innovative design ideas for visual components of UN events coordinated by UNRCO and UNCG;


Creatively summarizing stories from Tanzanian and International media outlets for dissemination to UN agencies and development partners;


Perform any other communications-related tasks required by the Communication Analyst, the rest of the UNRCO and the UNCG.

Competencies

To be considered for the position, individuals are required to meet the following criteria:


Strong theoretical and practical background in graphic design, including the use of design software such as Adobe Design Premium, In-Design, CorelDraw, web design tools such as Dreamweaver and Flash, etc;


Knowledge of photography and ability to edit and work with photos;


Show a clear and mature style of design, demonstrating an understanding of the communication requirements of a UN office;


Experience of graphic production from start to published/printed product with knowledge of printing processes (offset and digital) and colour management;


Good understanding of new and evolving technologies and digital platforms;


Knowledge of standard software packages, including MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, etc.;


Ability to work under tight deadlines;


Ability and willingness to work in a multicultural environment;


Willingness to learn from others and work well in a team environment;


Knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UN’s work in Tanzania is an advantage.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:

UNDP may accept interns providing the following conditions are met:


Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); in the fields of Knowledge Management, Information Management, Communications, or any other field in the social sciences;


Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);


Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.


Skills:

Proficiency in English and Kiswahili;


Computer literate in standard software applications;


Demonstrable knowledge of and interest in the work of the UN;


Demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Conditions:

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP.


All costs connected with an intern's participation in the Programme must be borne by:


The nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students;


The student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel (including to and from the office), accommodation, etc.


The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan.

Costs incurred by an intern in the discharge of his/her functions shall be reimbursed by UNDP under the same rules as costs reimbursed to staff members. Costs incurred by an intern undertaking official travel at the request of UNDP in the discharge of functions related to the internship activities shall be paid by the Organization on the same basis as costs incurred by staff members, including payment of DSA, as applicable.
